"No Uterus, No Opinion!"

Abortion is a topic I have thought long and hard on for years before finally reaching a conclusion. Part of that is because I'm a lesbian, which has decreased my chances of accidental pregnancy. I have never been in the position where I needed to think about getting an abortion. I never felt like it was my right to have an opinion on what someone else can do with their body and since it hasn't affected my body it was hard to develop a stance on it.

The Rolling Stone magazine has reported that Justin Beiber is pro-life. Of course, this is taking his quote entirely out of context but that is beside the point. Why are we asking Justin Beiber's opinion on this? A sixteen year old male pop singer? Why are any men involved in this decision? Especially a teenage boy who, as he said, has never been in a position to have to think critically about this topic.

I, personally, do not think I could get an abortion. I hope I never need to think about it. And because I have never had to I don't feel it's my place to make this decision for someone else. I don't know how a woman feels when making this decision. I don't know what's going on in her personal life, or what caused her to become pregnant. I don't have the right to tell her what to do.

I don't feel it is my place to make this decision for someone else, so how do men justify this? Why do they feel they have the right to tell any woman what to do with her body? We aren't telling you how to handle your turn your head and cough test at the doctor's office. We aren't dictating how you handle your bodies. Don't tell us how to handle our's.

And for the love of all that is holy, stick with asking teenage pop stars who made their clothes and which musicians inspire them.

To quote Jennifer Aniston's character on Friends: "No Uterus, No Opinion!"

  1. I agree, I think that everyone deserves to make their own choice, but that there definitely needs to be guidelines. I mean, studies are showing now that fetuses start having memories at about 30 weeks. We know we are alive because we remember living, so I can't even imagine abortions later than that. I don't think I'd ever get one personally, but I know people who have gotten them because of a pregnancy that was had by rape. There are different sides to everything. Thanks for the awesome article!
