Do I Need An Itinerary For Life?

This is the conversation I have had a thousand times now...

Them - "So what is your major?"
Me - "I'm a liberal studies major, I plan to transfer to a bigger school to get my degree in English/English lit and possibly minor in Political Sciences/Administration."
Them - "And what, exactly, can you DO with that degree?"
Me - "Ummm..."

I would like everyone to stop asking me what I will do with my degree. I have not even completed my first semester of college. I haven't decided yet and I'm tired of that question! There are many things one can do with an English/Lit degree. A plethora of choices and really I don't know where I'll be in my life four years. Sometime during my college education I may change my mind entirely. Who knows? What I do know is that I feel my mind is my best asset and an investment in my own education, no matter where that education takes me, can not possibly be a bad thing. Do I really need to plot out my entire future? How many people went to college with a set plan in mind and then actually followed through with that? I know I went through a portion of high school believing I would grow up to perform on Broadway. Honestly, I don't really see myself headed in that direction now. Who really knows? And who says I have to decide now?

So seriously, stop asking me that question. I am in college because I know that no matter where it takes me, I can only go up from here. I don't need to have a definite plan. I don't even need to ever leave college. Maybe I'll continue my education on the side and be a student for life.

Actually, that's highly likely...

  1. I know you well enough to know you were destined to be a teacher. Have you ever considered a degree in special education? Just a thought.
